Body check by elle kennedy6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() His groin throbbed, the erection straining against his zipper harder and more painful than ever. Every muscle in his body was coiled tight. She gasped against his mouth, then relaxed, parting her lips so he could slide his tongue inside, so he could lick and explore and drink her in. Before she could change her mind, he tangled one hand through her hair and tugged her towards him, kissing her hard and deep. He waited, praying she didn’t say those words. Somehow he’s got to find the real killer and convince the only woman he’ll ever love to give him a second chance. But he can’t ignore the overwhelming evidence against Sarah-nor the desire he still feels for her. Finn knows in his heart Sarah is innocent of murdering town bad-girl Teresa Donovan. Still, just being in his larger-than-life presence sets Sarah’s pulse racing. Sheriff Patrick “Finn” Finnegan keeps assuring Sarah he’ll get her out of this mess, but her trust in him was annihilated long ago. “What do you mean, I’m under arrest?” Single mom Sarah Connelly can’t believe the man she used to be in love with is throwing her in the clink. ![]()

![]() ![]() In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts is a compassionate look at drug addiction by best-selling author and physican Gabor Maté. ![]() The mix of personal stories - including the author's discussion of his own "high-status" addictive tendencies - and science with positive solutions makes the book equally useful for lay readers and professionals This book argues against contemporary health, social, and criminal justice policies toward addiction and those impacted by it. ![]() Simplifying a wide array of brain and addiction research findings from around the globe, the book avoids glib self-help remedies, instead promoting a thorough and compassionate self-understanding as the first key to healing and wellness. ![]() Maté presents addiction not as a discrete phenomenon confined to an unfortunate or weak-willed few, but as a continuum that runs throughout (and perhaps underpins) our society not a medical "condition" distinct from the lives it affects, rather the result of a complex interplay among personal history, emotional, and neurological development, brain chemistry, and the drugs (and behaviors) of addiction. Based on Gabor Maté's two decades of experience as a medical doctor and his work with the severely addicted on Vancouver's skid row, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts reenvisions this much misunderstood field by taking a holistic approach. ![]()

Antonius diogenes cloud cuckoo land6/6/2023 ![]() ![]() It would rob the reader of some of the joys of the book to say too much about how all these disparate threads come together, but the novel reads like it’s half its actual length. Doerr has packed it dense with what are clearly hours and hours of deep research-the chapter on the building of the biggest cannon in the ancient world is just one example–and yet it flies. It helps that Doerr’s prose is extraordinarily clear and clean. He effortlessly mimics a half-dozen different voices, ranging across junior-high English assignments, academic jargon, and YouTube videos, while his narration occasionally drops in a devastating aside or beautiful piece of description. Like David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, to which people are already comparing it, Cloud Cuckoo Land is a blend of invention and history, science fiction and fable, romance and war story. ![]() But in contrast to Mitchell’s sometimes cold and cerebral detachment, Doerr’s novel hums with sympathy for all his characters, even the most unpleasant one. Seymour, in the hands of another author, could easily be a cliché, a Trenchcoat Mafia wannabe who a steady diet of shady Internet videos has radicalized. ![]()

![]() ![]() The name I wrote in my dedication is one which an aunt recalls. Only good friends called her by name, and they passed away before she did. My maternal great-grandmother was a matriarch who demanded due respect. ![]() Traditionally, we addressed older people by familial rank, not their name. My great-grandmother inspired my debut novel, but I don’t know her name. Post-chemo depression was tough, but it spurred me to write. It’s possible to survive life-threatening illnesses, and even use them as catalysts for positive change. I’ve survived a brain tumour and breast cancer. And as for quant trading, err… Enough said. When I became a banker, no one knew what that was. Physics made everyone think of maths – something they couldn’t do. I was previously a theoretical physicist, an investment banker and a quantitative trader. Writing is my fourth career, and the first one everyone understands. ![]()

At first light book barbara nickless6/4/2023 ![]() ![]() As the corpses add up, they realize they are facing a serial killer. When a corpse is discovered on the banks of Chicago’s Calumet River, Wilding joins Detective Addie Bisset and her partner Detective Patrick McBrady to solve the crime. ![]() I’ve already ordered #2 and preordered #3, and plan to continue reading them as they are written. Evan Wilding series has all the sophistication of a Silva novel. My favorite thrillers are the Gabriel Allon series written by Daniel Silva, and the Dr. A tenured college professor, he moonlights for the Chicago Police Department as a forensic semiotician, an expert in the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation. He overcompensates for his height with a brain that is as delightful as it is immense, with a knowledge base that encompasses many subjects. I adored the main character here, Evan Wilding, Ph.D., an intelligent professor who is a four-foot, five-inch tall dwarf. Author Nickless demonstrates great plotting, fascinating historical references, little-known trivial tidbits, intriguing characters, and a “ticking clock.” I have been binging on all things Viking lately, and At First Light is a contemporary take on the subject. I can’t express how much I enjoyed At First Light. ![]() |
