Q luther6/9/2023 It might sound like a conspiracy within a conspiracy, but, as Buzzfeed first reported in 2018, chances are that QAnon, at the start at least, took inspiration from an amorphous organisation of leftist artists who, for most of the mid-1990s, called themselves Luther Blissett after the 1980s English footballer. QAnon is America’s most dangerous conspiracy theory, and if you pull hard enough on its threads, the whole tangled mess lands, somehow, at the feet of a group of Italian artists. He is also known as the “QAnon Shaman” and has been seen waving a “Q sent me” placard in other protests. “QAnon Shaman” Jake Angeli, one of the more colourful Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol in January © Reuters/Cheney OrrĪs the US Capitol was overwhelmed by Donald Trump supporters in early January, one figure stood out: with his painted face, bare chest, fur hat and American flag-draped spear, Jake Angeli became one of the most photographed rioters of the day.

Ellen tebbits by beverly cleary6/9/2023 Her first job was as a librarian in Yakima, Washington, where she met many children who were searching for the same books that she had always hoped to find as a child herself. She moved to California to attend the University of California, Berkeley, and after graduation with a B.A in English in 1938, studied at the School of Librarianship at the University of Washington in Seattle, where she earned a degree in librarianship in 1939. Thereafter, she was a frequent visitor to the library, though she rarely found the books she most wanted to read - those about children like herself. It wasn't until she was in third grade that she found enjoyment from books, when she started reading The Dutch Twins by Lucy Fitch Perkins. She was slow in learning to read, due partly to her dissatisfaction with the books she was required to read and partly to an unpleasant first grade teacher. When she was 6, her family moved to Portland, Oregon, where she went to grammar and high school. Mouse.īeverly Cleary was born Beverly Atlee Bunn in McMinnville, Oregon. Some of her best known and loved characters are Ramona Quimby and her sister Beatrice ("Beezus"), Henry Huggins, and Ralph S. Her characters are normal children facing challenges that many of us face growing up, and her stories are liberally laced with humour. Beverly Cleary (ApMarch 25, 2021) was the author of over 30 books for young adults and children.

Our Man in Havana by Graham Greene6/9/2023 * The novel was copyrighted in 1958 and published in 1959, thus the disparity in dates. Also, Jeremy Northam does a fine turn in the novel's audio version. The 1959 film version stars Alec Guiness, Burl Ives, and Maureen O'Hara.and Noel Coward as Hawthorne. But when his fake reports start coming true things suddenly get more complicated and Havana becomes a threatening place. In return all he has to do is file a few reports. His adolescent daughter spends his money with a skill that amazes him, so when a mysterious Englishman offers him an extra income he's tempted. Wormold is a vacuum cleaner salesman in a city of power outages. Conceived as one of Graham Greene’s “entertainments,” it tells of MI6’s man in Havana, Wormold, a former vacuum-cleaner salesman turned reluctant secret agent out of economic necessity. But when his fake reports start coming true, things suddenly get more complicated and Havana becomes a threatening place. A very good book with spotting to the page ages and name. In return all he has to do is carry out a little espionage and file a few reports. John Atkinson Fine & Rare Books - A first edition, first printing published by Heinemann in 1958. Our Man in Havana is an espionage thriller, a penetrating character study, and a political satire that still resonates today. Above by Isla Morley6/8/2023 Part two of the novel, on the other hand, made the book’s rating drop to a 4/5. You’ll feel every single emotion in the spectrum as you read! It’s also definitely made me more aware of the poor victims crime out there – my heart goes out to each and every one of you who have suffered similarly to Blythe. The plot was so believable that I could tell it was inspired from a true story somewhere out there. Part one was definitely a 5/5 read – I shuddered through it and I’ve literally spoken about this book to anyone who would listen to me. This book contains two parts part one is about Blythe’s struggles with her captivity and part two… well, I’m not going to spoil anything. Is Dobbs, however, slightly more perceptive than she had previously thought? Is there, perhaps, something out there that he is shielding her from? Being kept trapped for over twenty years, Blythe goes through both hope and depression as she adapts to new situations every single day. Blythe finds out her role as she reads his manifesto – she is to help him repopulate the new world. Dobbs is convinced that the end of the world is approaching and has planned accordingly for decades. Blythe Hallowell is a teenager when she is taken from her home by Dobbs, the friendly but eccentric man always recommending books to her at the local library.

Bloody British History by Penny Legg6/7/2023 She also delves into the murky world of Spivs, Gangs, prostitutes and Robbers. Heavily illustrated with both contemporary and modern photographs Penny takes you back to some of the most infamous wartime crimes such as the blackout ripper, the bath chair murderer and the last person to be prosecuted in Britain for witchcraft. Lonely and far from home, some rioted and many looked for other distractions with desertion being a significant problem and one which was often funded by crime. American and Canadian troops found themselves transported to Britain in preparation for D-Day. The military services had its share of crime and the influx of foreign troops added to the problem. Criminal activity wasn't just a civilian occupation. However, the reality was that criminals saw the war as an opportunity to exploit the emergency conditions and those with a previously unblemished reputation found themselves tempted off the straight and narrow. An intriguing insight into a unique episode in British history for any historian or reader Was There Crime in the Second World War? At a time of national emergency, the average person could be forgiven for thinking that crime rates would go down as everyone tried to help the war effort.Heavily illustrated throughout with contemporary and modern photographs.

Her struggles with her promises and telling the truth mix well with what she is trying to preach to everyone else. She even blends into the group of popular and religious girls of the school. Joanna, who prefers her Italian last name over Gordon, has agreed to go back in the closet in this new town with two goals in mind: a road trip and a chance at helping others in the way she has always wanted to. Joanna Gordon and Mary Carlson are the primary characters because of the developing romance. I haven’t seen much of it in my limited experience with LGBTQ literature. I like that religion is incorporated in a way to teach and to show love toward your fellow person. I found this book at a book sale last month, and I was happy to have enjoyed it so much. Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit, by Jaye Robin Brown, shows characters openly being themselves and ties faith into loving everyone. She doesn’t want to break the promise to her dad, even if Mary might return her feelings. After she reluctantly agrees, she falls for Mary Carlson, the sister of her new friend. He asks her to do the impossible: to lie low for her senior year. All of that changes when he remarries and they move to conservative Rome, Georgia. Joanna Gordon has been out and proud for years, and her radio evangelist father has been supportive.
