Fabulous by Bonnie Christensen6/12/2023 ![]() That Is My Dream! is a picture book in which illustrator Daniel Miyares adapts his poem, “Dream Variation,” in which a young Black boy in confronted by the harsh reality of segregation and racism over this day, but he dreams of a different life – one full of freedom, hope, and so many possibilities! Langston Hughes was an author who was also one of the central figures of the Harlem Renaissance. Don’t get heated, because we’re about to get all up in your mind and recommend some books for young readers – both about the European Renaissance (of the 15 th and 16 th centuries) and the later Harlem Renaissance (of the early 20 th century) – that might impel you to move your self to the closest bookstore. So, take that plastic off the sofa and get cozy. ![]() ![]() We thought we’d use it – or rather its title – to create this week’s reading list. The immediate response has been overwhelmingly positive for this massive sixteen-track opus that manages to both honor Black musical artists throughout history and contain enough dance-floor bangers destined to instill a wild rumpus in the club. You don’t need to be a member of the BeyHive to know that after nearly a decade of surprise drops and visual albums, Beyoncé’s seventh full-length album, Renaissance, was unveiled this past Friday. Hello, and thanks for joining us at Tundra Telegram, the column where we listen in on topics that are currently running the (social media) world, and count down some books we think are irreplaceable. ![]()

The mummy case by elizabeth peters6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() Unlike modern Christians, modern Muslims still kill people because they do not embrace their faith-people who, as has been widely documented, they call infidels. Yet, Muhammad's conversion techniques were to pick a city, surround it, give it a day to convert-or-die, then proceed to "convert" its inhabitants. (Before vociferous non-Christians and atheists start attacking me, know that I don't even go to church.) For example Emerson says that Christians literally walk into a man's house and order him to become a Christian. ![]() It also increased the attacks to Christianity. The mentions of the couple "connubial" and sexual relations increased in this book I think if removed, the book might be reduced by 3 dozen pages. Apart from Emerson's constant and hysterically disproportionate reactions, the "Reader" has to constantly deal with Peabody's eternal conceitedness and belittling of males (and the only intelligent females are the ones who agree with Amelia, by the way) and their very young son's absurd precociousness. Nevertheless, this-the third I read-is the least I have liked so far. ![]() ![]() Christian-bashing galore! Barbara Mertz (Elizabeth Peters' real name) is certainly a good writer and her Peabody series is quite entertaining. ![]()

![]() They are increasingly used for purposes other than entertainment, yet debates about videogames still fork along one of two paths: accusations of debasement through violence and isolation or defensive paeans to their potential as serious cultural works. Reviews of new games and profiles of game designers now regularly appear in the New York Times and the New Yorker, and sales figures for games are reported alongside those of books, music, and movies. In recent years, computer games have moved from the margins of popular culture to its center. ![]()

A spool of blue thread summary6/9/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() “She predisposes her characters to crave the unattainable-parental love (in both directions), a sense of belonging, … forgiveness, amnesty from familial wrongdoing, the comfort of home.” Much of the story is built around Abby-as mother of four, as wife, as daughter-in-law-and around a sprawling Baltimore house with a huge wrap-around porch and the “power to draw the family back to it over generations.” The house almost acts like an additional character, interacting with builders, repairers, and family members coming and going. As in many of her previous novels, Tyler explores the resentments that develop and fester between siblings, spouses, and in parent-child connections-as well as their affectionate bonds. ![]() Tyler's story encompasses three generations of the Whitshank family, wandering back and forth over 7 decades of the 20th century.
